Summer Big Fish

The large Redfish have been eating well this summer. Flies and Topwater plugs have produced the best.

Weather has still been somewhat windy most of the time, but fishing is getting better and better. The one saving grace is even on windy days, the sun has been out making the sight fishing great. With the arrival of baitfish and higher water levels we have switched to spring patterns targeting single and small groups of Redfish. Large Seatrout are in their spawning mode and can be found laying up in sand holes and also in small groups. The large oversize Redfish are still a consistent target on good weather days and should be improving when conditions become stable. Flyfishing has been great giving anglers numerous shots at Redfish and Seatrout throughout the day. It shall remain an all day affair until water temps. get hot, which will then make the best times to fish early morning and late evening. If you enjoy fly or light tackle sight fishing for Redfish cruising shorelines, big Seatrout, LARGE trophy Redfish or even possibly jumping some Tarpon, give us a call.

March-Early April

What can we say about March, wind, wind and more wind. Now that it is April the winds have continued with a little rain mixed in. The few days a week the winds aren't blowing the weather has been perfect, calm and sunny. The fishing ,wind or no wind, has been good, especially for the big Redfish. Numerous schools have shown up on a consistent basis and are eating well. Smaller Redfish have been tailing on the flats in the morning and sometimes throughout the day, giving great sight fishing opportunities with flies. Large Seatrout can still be found lying motionless in sand holes. The water levels are starting to climb which will get the fish spreading out and moving onto flats that have been dry for most of the winter. Fly fishing has been pretty good, some days better then others due to the wind. We are looking forward to the next couple of months because fishing should get even better with the water levels coming up and more consistent weather patterns (no more cold fronts). On another positive note Tarpon will start showing up as the weather warms. Spotted my first one (tarpon) on the flats last week.

Capt. Nick had the pleasure of fishing with Gay Jennings ( publisher of Flyfishing in Saltwaters magazine) and Christian Mustad ( owner of Nautilus fly reels). The weather was not what was fore casted, sunny and light winds, the winds were light but it was partly to mostly cloudy which made it tough to sight fish. After doing some searching, fish began tailing, giving the two some good shots. Gary and Christian were able to release 4 nice redfish.

Brian Beck joined Capt. Nick for another day of flyfishing for reds on Mosquito Lagoon. After releasing 20 on fly the day before they knew they had the work cut out for them. Although the fish weren't as cooperative as the day before, the weather was beautiful and Brian was able to release 4 nice redfish.

Todd and Brian had a great day of flyfishing for redfish with Capt. Nick on the Mosquito Lagoon. The pair landed 20 redfish on fly. All the fish were found cruising in small groups in shallow water.

Mike Arbise joined Capt. Nick on the Mosquito lagoon to try his hand at flyfishing for redfish. He definitely had a successful day to say the least, landing 9 redfish on fly. Not bad for his first time.

Winter Fishing

Capt. Nick and Capt. Scott have been very busy this winter guiding and doing a little traveling so excuse the lack of fishing reports. During winter fishing in our area everything is based on weather. Due to the fact of cold fronts, the fishing has been feast or famine. The fronts create windy, cloudy conditions which make it hard to locate fish sometimes. On the sunny days the fishing has been good to excellent and should remain this way. Sight fishing with the fly rod has remained steady on good weather days. The large Redfish have begun to show as well as the Black Drum. Also, Large Seatrout can be seen in or around sand spots, though very hard to catch at times.

Nov. 8-14

Sight fishing has been great. With the sunny skies, anglers are getting numerous shots at tailing, cruising and laid up redfish. The large seatrout have shown up in the shallows, easily seen suspending over sand spots. The water is beginning to drop and cool off with the arrival of cold fronts. Redfish will begin to get into schools awaiting to eat a well placed fly or bait.

The first week of November started out real windy, but after the winds subsided the fishing became great. Redfish were found nosing down over grass ready to jump on anything you threw at them. The water levels are starting to drop and get real clear with the cooler temps, so sight fishing will remain good.

SUMMER HAS COME AND IS ALMOST GONE. CAPT. NICK AND CAPT. SCOTT HAD A CONSISTENT BITE ON BIG REDFISH AND SEATROUT. THE BIG REDS SHOULD HANG AROUND INTO OCTOBER AS LONG AS THE WEATHER STAYS STABLE (NO HURRICANES). BOTH CAPTAINS DID SOME EXTENSIVE TRAVELING THIS SUMMER. CAPT. NICK SPENDING TIME IN AUSTRALIA, NEW ZEALAND, ISLAMORADA, EVERGLADES AND DID SOME GUIDING IN THE BAHAMAS. CAPT. SCOTT ALSO SPENT TIME IN ISLAMORADA AND OUT WEST. SOMETIMES IT IS GOOD TO GET OUT OF YOUR ELEMENT CHASING OTHER TYPES OF FISH WITH THE LONG ROD, IT MAKES YOU A BETTER ALL AROUND ANGLER. FISHING REPORTS WILL BE ON A MORE CONSISTENT BASIS AS OF NOW. THE BEST MONTHS FOR TRUE SIGHTFISHING ARE COMING UP SO GIVE US A CALL, WE WOULD LOVE TO GET YOU OUT THERE TO SHOW YOU WHAT MOSQUITO LAGOON HAS TO OFFER.

March Light Tackle

Light tackle fishing in March was second to none. Redfish remained in schools due to low water levels making easy targets for anglers. The LARGE redfish started to show up and have been a consistent bite. With the water warming up and getting higher, the fishing is only going to get better in April. Slot size redfish will begin to crawl into the skinny water. Large Seatrout will also remain in shallow water preparing to spawn.

March Flyfishing

March provided some excellent flyfishing. Numerous shots at tailing and grouped up fish. The water remained low, so the majority of the fish stayed in schools. Water levels are beginning to come up slowly. If this continues, April will be a great month for fish in skinny water that was inaccessible to them in months. Black Drum, Redfish and Seatrout will be the target species in April.

Winter weather finally showed up. February provided anglers with numerous fly and light tackle oppurtunities. The redfish have been in large schools and the seatrout have been seen sitting in sandholes. Along with redfish and seatrout black drum have made a presence.

Fishing has been consistently good even though the weather in 2007 has been a little weird. Record high temps and the wind will blow due south one day and then due north the next. On the few sunny days we have had, sight fishing for redfish, seatrout and black drum has been good. The redfish have started to school up into large groups and the big seatrout have moved into the shallows providing anglers opportunity to sight fish some of these large, smart females. On cloudy days, tailing redfish in skinny water has been the norm. A well placed fly or bait has been rewarded with a tight line and the sound of the drag singing.
